Help from Registrar of Adoptions

Submitted by the wife of Adoptee ID 799

We went through Marike Bloem at the Registrar of Adoptions in Pretoria. We gave my husband's details to her in August 2002. I phoned in August 2003, after which she told me that they had sent out a letter to the birth mother and were still awaiting a response.
I, in the mean time, started searching on the internet (after receiving more info from the adoptive parents) and actually found out who the birth mother was, as the grandfather was a prominent person. We decided to still carry on working through adoptions, as we wanted to respect the birth mother's wishes for anonimity.
A day later Marike Bloem phoned to say that the mother wanted Marike to meet my husband first. Two days after the meeting with Marike, my husband met his biological mother. The meeting went very well and we see each other on a regular basis. My husband also met with his half-brother in December. It is an absolute success story!!!
I must say that Marike Bloem has been wonderful. She is cautious in the sense of trying to protect all parties from unrealistic expectations - which is 100% understandable. I would really suggest that people who are looking make an appointment with her.

WEB AUTHOR's NOTE: I wholeheartedly agree with these sentiments. As some of you will know, I recommend to those of you adopted in South Africa that contacting the Registrar of Adoptions is the first thing to do. On my Tips page, I give the name of Mrs Weidemann.
