Missing Grandchild

I am writing to share with you the words of my mother-in-law on her deathbed. The entire family was there, husband, sister, brothers, children, grandchildren, to say goodbye to this wonderful woman.
Although I was by then divorced from her son, I had always thought of his mother as mine. She had always been there for me, even years and years ago, before her son and I were married, when we broke the news of my pregnancy. She held my hand when I signed the final adoption papers, and consoled me in those dark days which followed.

Now she beckoned me over, and gathering her strength, she whispered in my ear:
"There's a grandchild missing from this room."

I did a quick headcount - all 12 were present.
"They're all here, Mom."

"No, hinny, there's one missing - a little girl I never knew but whom I think of every night as I go to sleep, and for whom I pray every morning when I wake up."

Then I knew who she meant - and now it was too late.
