Each birth parent who gave up a child for
adoption did so for reasons which were valid at that time. Many of them now need to share their
traumatic experience with others. In years gone by, the majority of birth mothers were shunned by society in general, and most had to go into "hiding" until after the baby was born. Supportive family and friends were the exception and those mothers lucky enough to have these seem to have managed to cope with the adoption process better than their counterparts. Birth fathers historically have no rights regarding their children, although the laws are changing, particularly in South Africa. Often both parents, as time dulls the pain and confusion, feel the need to know that they made the right decision; that their child is happy.
